2009 Hall of Fame Awards

David Furukawa, P.E.

Award inscribed: In recognition of his many achievements and having been an active leader in several desalination organization, effectively advancing the membrane industry during a distinguished career of over 40 years.

Professor Julius “Bud” Glater, Ph.D.

Award inscribed: In recognition of his involvement with RO and desalination since the 1960’s at UCLA and many achievements including a paper capturing the historical development of membranes, as an adjunct professor emeritus, this walking encyclopedia continues to encourage and advise doctoral students.


2009 Water Quality of the Year Award

Claude A. “Bud” Lewis, Mayor of City of Carlsbad and Chair of San Diego County Water Authority

Award inscribed: In recognition of his continued enthusiastic support for seawater desalination since 1994 and as Carlsbad’s first and foremost “desal” advocate Bud is one of Southern California’s most progressive mayors.  As well as being an effective leader of the San Diego County Water Authority, a strong proponent for Membrane Technologies and of the Association.


2009 Outstanding Member Award

WATEK Engineering Corporation

Award inscribed: In recognition of the company’s many contributions to the Association specifically the extraordinary efforts in developing the AMTA “Fact Sheets” along with working on technical transfer workshops, legislative affairs and governmental programs, and annual conferences.

City of Palm Coast for the Water Treatment Plant #2

Award inscribed: In recognition of pioneering the successful utilization of nanofiltration for membrane softening in a potable water application in lieu of “conventional” lime softening; in addition, for being an impressive facility that is a valued example for our industry and leading the way for subsequent membrane plants.

  • Pioneers acceptance of NF for MS in lieu of lime softening
  • Started as a private utility and converted into a municipal
  • Ability to successfully compete for state and national awards over the past two decades

  • EPA certified HVAC Technician for Types I & II
  • Licensed Plumber and City Plumbing Inspector

2009/2010 AMTA/NWRI Fellowship

Evan Hatakeyama, University of Colorado at Boulder

Evan Hatakeyama is a 3rd year Ph.D. Student - Chemical Engineering Major at the University of Colorado at Boulder in the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department.  He is studying under Advisors Douglas L. Gin and Richard D. Noble.  His fellowship winning application submitted under the title of “Development of a Novel Polymer Membrane with Uniform, Sub-1-Nanometer Pores for Desalination.”

William Shane Walker, University of Texas at Austin

William Shane Walker is a 2nd year Ph.D. Student – Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Major at the University of Texas at Austin in the Architectural and Environmental Engineering Department.  He is studying under Advisor Dr. Desmond F. Lawler.  His fellowship winning application submitted under the title of “Improving the Recovery of Reverse Osmosis Desalination by Electrodialysis.”
