The International Desalination Association (IDA) was established in 1985 as a non-profit organization dedicated to the development, promotion and appropriate use of desalination technology and water reuse worldwide. Together with its regional affiliates AEDyR, AMTA, EDS, JDA and WSTA and associate affiliates, ADA, InDA, PakDA, and the Chinese Desalination Association, IDA is an alliance of more than 2,000 global industry leaders.

IDA holds a biennial World Congress and exhibition and organizes regional seminars throughout the world. Members receive Desalination & Water Reuse quarterly magazine and IDA News, a bi-monthly newsletter, which examines industry trends and provides information on current events and the activities of regional affiliates. IDA also publishes an annual Membership Directory in addition to "The Desalting Plants Inventory" and "The ABCs of Desalting." The website provides members with information on membership, publications and events as well as immediate access to the membership and publications database where members can search for other members and download papers from past IDA World Congresses.

Scholarships are provided to graduates pursuing an advanced degree in desalination or a related field, and a newly created foundation enables IDA to support desalination activities that lack sufficient financial resources.

The Southeast Desalting Association (SEDA) was formed in 1994 as an affiliate of the American Desalting Association (now AMTA). The fast growing association is dedicated to the improvement of the quality of water supplies through desalting, reuse and other water sciences. SEDA includes members concerned with environmental regulations and legislation, process design, equipment manufacture, operation and maintenance, and research and development. SEDA's objectives include the promotion, both to the public and to elected officials, of available technologies that improve water quality education; training and certification of plant operation personnel; communication with the membership; development of meaningful interface with regulatory agencies; technology transfer; and protection of the environment.

The Southwest Membrane Operator Association (SWMOA) was formed in 2006. SWMOA is the newest affiliate of the American Membrane Technology Association dedicated to the Southwest United States region including, but not limited to, Arizona , California , Hawaii , and Nevada .  SWMOA is a membrane operators group that has been formed to provide membrane operators a forum to exchange information, share experiences and knowledge, obtain training and acquire continuing education credits necessary for Operator Certification requirements.  SWMOA is an organization that is for membrane operators, run by membrane operators and has been established to meet the technical needs of membrane operators.  The number of membrane based treatment plants is growing rapidly in the southwest.  With that growth there is a need for an organization dedicated to the education, training and networking of people involved in membrane technology.  SWMOA is dedicated to filling that need, with our focus on training membrane plant operators.
