This paper and presentation address some of the challenges that operators face when attempting to operate a membrane treatment system in parallel with a conventional surface water treatment facility to produce drinking water that meets all regulated requirements. The facility used for this case study has successfully operated the surface water treatment plant with conventional technology for over 20 years. A recent plant expansion added a parallel treatment plant that includes membrane filtration. The expansion doubled the treatment capacity of the facility and has brought about several daily operational challenges.
