Three recent case studies in Ohio investigated the appropriate technology selection for softening. Financial comparisons between membrane softening and more traditional softening technologies like lime softening and ion exchange softening were comparable. However, additional critical factors beyond finances have the ability to disqualify membrane technology as an option, and must be evaluated when considering membrane technology such as available raw water, pre-treatment, operational support, and concentrate disposal. This presentation will discuss such critical factors as these and how they were navigated in three case studies. Utilities will gain insight and strategies for approaching these criteria when evaluating membrane softening technologies.
