Ceramic membranes are commonly used for both water and diesel filtration. However, the first ceramic membrane was not originally designed for these applications. The first ceramic membrane was developed during the Manhattan project in World War II for the use of gaseous diffusion in efforts to develop the first nuclear weapon. In the 1980’s ceramic membranes started to be more applied to water purification. However, at this time ceramic membranes were still classified as strategically controlled goods. Initially this classification made commercial applications restricted until their controlled designation was deregulated in the 1990s. After that there has been a plethora of growth and advancement in its design and operation. A common myth that many people in the water purification sector have is that ceramic membranes are all the same. Statements such as ‘We looked at ceramics once before’ are typical. However, this is far from the truth.
