The intent of the paper is to provide an overall picture demonstrating the success of a biological filtration process, over the past eleven years, as a proven application for pretreating poor quality groundwater in small system membrane water treatment plants. This information will provide designers and owners with real project examples summarizing the performance of multiple reverse osmosis (RO) plants ranging in age from 1 to 11 years, all utilizing biological filtration for the pretreatment of water prior to the membrane system.
