West Basin Municipal Water District (West Basin) has chosen to follow a ?step-wise? approach to incorporating Ocean Water Desalination as 10% of West Basin?s diverse water portfolio. In 2002, West Basin began pilot scale testing to determine the viability of Ultrafiltration (UF) and Reverse Osmosis (RO) as treatment processes to produce potable desalinated water. Upon completion of the pilot scale facility in 2010, West Basin began operating and continues to operate an Ocean Water Desalination Demonstration Facility (Demonstration Facility) in Redondo Beach, CA. While the pilot plant was aimed at testing membrane performance, the Demonstration Facility is dedicated to address all aspects and impacts of a full-scale facility. These studies include intake effects assessments, energy audits of membrane systems and associated recovery devices, and high salinity sensitivity analyses.
