Biofouling is a major problem in membrane operation in water purification. Ultra-pure chlorine dioxide is an effective chemical for removal and prevention of biofouling without damage to membranes. Intermittent dosing can greatly reduce chlorine dioxide costs compared to other means of controlling biofouling.
