Lee County Utilities owns and operates the Green Meadows lime softening facility that treats a blend of surficial aquifer groundwater and intermediate Sandstone aquifer groundwater, both hard, freshwater sources, producing up to 9 mgd. The facility?s aging treatment infrastructure was nearing the end of its useful life and needed to be replaced to maintain reliability and to continue meeting regulations. Due to the increased demand on fresh water aquifers throughout Florida and the resultant negative impacts on water quantity, quality, and on wetlands, these freshwater sources could not be used to expand the plant?s capacity. Plant capacity would require the addition of deeper brackish-water ground wells in the upper Floridan Aquifer (UFA).
