Microbial desalination cells used a pretreatment for seawater RO can reduce salt content between 50-70%. The pretreatment step is self-powered because of the energy created in the cell. An energy savings of 7 kW-hr/1000 gallons would save a 1 MGD RO facility $200,000 per year.
