The North Alamo Water Supply Corporation (NAWSC) completed a Feasibility Study of Energy Efficient Alternatives for Brackish Groundwater Desalination (November 2018). The study identified energy-efficient options for developing new desalination supplies while reducing desalination energy requirement by 50 percent. In 2019, NAWSC implemented a pilot study that corroborates the energy-saving benefits of a desalination approach based on nano-filtration and/or low-pressure reverse osmosis membranes. This presentation will provide a brief history of the project; an overview of the feasibility and pilot studies; the cost implications of the proposed project; and, the opportunities for energy-saving approaches for other brackish groundwater desalination systems in Texas. The presentation will include a brief explanation of the more common approaches to brackish groundwater desalination and membrane desalination terminology.
