This presentation will discuss West Basin Municipal Water District as a case study for innovative uses of recycled water. In its 20th year of water recycling with membrane technologies, West Basin has cultivated an approach to providing its customers with fit-for-purpose designer water qualities. The discussion will include how West Basin treats secondary effluent from the City of Los Angeles’ Hyperion Treatment Plant to five distinct water qualities in order to meet the needs of various clients. In addition to potable reuse and irrigation customer applications, West Basin supplies three well know refinery customers within its service area with recycled water quality that is tailored to their specific refinery process needs. The presentation will include discussion of the challenges associated with treating a highly variable secondary effluent to the very exacting standards of the oil industry.
