For low-pressure membrane systems, one of the key design considerations involves where the waste from the membrane system will be sent and how it will be treated. For a cost effective low-pressure membrane system, the recovery is typically limited to 95-97% recovery. A 2-stage membrane system may increase the overall plant recovery to greater than 99%, significantly reducing the volume of reject generated by the water treatment plant. This paper will evaluate the benefits a 2-stage membrane system can provide.
