The mission of the Cumberland County Improvement Authority (“The Authority”) is to develop projects which are integral to the economic and environmental sustainability of Cumberland County. To further this goal, in 2018 Energy Power Partners (EPP) identified an opportunity to use previously wasted heat from its existing LFG to Energy Plant to evaporate leachate concentrate from an existing reverse osmosis (“RO”) system using the LM-HT® Concentrator from Heartland Water Technology. Prior to the project, the solid waste complex was hauling 25 trucks per week of highly concentrated liquid to a wastewater treatment plant. By evaporating RO Concentrate on-site, EPP significantly improved efficiency of its caterpillar 3520 electric engines while reducing Solid Waste Complex operating costs and delivering a more environmentally sustainable solution. In the presentation members of the project team will discuss demonstrated improvements to engine efficiency, the leachate volume reduction which can be achieved through RO concentrate evaporation, and the economic and environmental benefits delivered through on-site treatment of RO concentrate.
