This paper talks about how large SWRO and MBR projects are now competing on the same level as thermal technologies in the Middle East. Large MBR installations have been contracted in the area and the product water of these plant is now substituting for central cooling systems, industrial and irrigation purposes the more expensive distillate previously generated by thermal desalination. The development of large SWRO project has been observed not only for stand alone projects but also in conjunction with cogeneration of power and water previously dominated by thermal technology. The main driver for this is the lower energy consumption that allows a better heat rate in the cogeneration cycle.
