The cold semi-arid climate of the Missouri Plateau of North Dakota adds several challenges for water and wastewater facilities in the region. Adequate and dependable water sources are limited, so regional water systems have evolved to provide communities and rural users with reliable, safe drinking water. Because of the region?s climate and physical geography, water treatment plant residual disposal is often restricted to deep well injection, evaporation ponds, or discharge back into source waters.
