The design, construction, and start-up of a surface water membrane treatment facility, while difficult, were not the last challenges faced by operational staff. Daily operation of the individual system components, coupled with the ongoing costs required for maintenance and chemical addition can cause major treatment headaches. This paper will track the real world operational efforts and optimization of a 25 MGD facility that includes pretreatment, membrane treatment, and post membrane disinfection followed by GAC filtration. Specific highlights will include upstream pre-treatment, downstream filtration, membrane operations, and a cost analysis of treatment optimization variables for each. All operational optimization efforts were performed with the daily assistance of treatment plant operations staff.
