The feed spacer on a spiral wound RO membrane is intended to develop for vortexes for prevention of localized salt concentrations to reduce scaling and generous openings to minimize fouling. A thin feed spacer will allow an increase the membrane area in a standard 8? element which will allow greater water production in that same membrane element. Testing has shown that there is not a significant increase in scaling potential with a thin feed spacer.
