Academic research on the use of flat-sheet coupons of NF and RO membranes at bench scale for removal of PFAS dates back to 2006. Tang et. al (2006) investigated removal of perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS) by four RO membranes (BW30, LFC3, ESPA3 and SG). PFOS passage through these membranes at feed concentrations ranging from 1 to 1,500 ppm was, in nearly all cases, less than 1% (99% rejection). PFOS rejection was observed to increase with increasing PFOS feed concentration.
