A Preliminary Engineering Report was prepared for the city in 2011 addressing proposed improvements to the plant. In 2018, the city received funding through the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium to design the new plant. Tetra Tech in association with DOWL was selected to design the new plant, along with other improvements to the water distribution system. The city water supply is provided from two local lakes.
