As climate change further stresses water supplies, there’s increased focus on minimizing waste from municipal WTP’s. As a result, facilities often investigate ways to either reduce waste or recycle waste streams, and optimize cleaning regimes (frequency, chemicals…). The first portion of the presentation will cover items to check if cleaning recovery isn’t as expected. It’s important to monitor cleaning effectiveness to avoid long-term challenges with production and increased waste. Knowing key details to investigate will help avoid irrecoverable fouling and unanticipated waste volumes. The second portion of the presentation will look at the two MF/UF residual streams, backwash waste and cleaning waste, and possible options for handling these. This will include discussion of a few regulatory factors to consider, details to consider if waste recycle is going to be incorporated to increase overall recovery, as well as discussion of some lessons learned in the past.
