Port St. Lucie’s James E Anderson RO Facility is a 22.5 MGD treatment plant that has been in service since 2005. The facility is in need of membrane replacements and is currently undergoing a pilot testing effort to verify acceptable membrane elements. In addition to traditional configuration testing, the pilot efforts include an alternative flow reversal (FR) technology with potential to greatly improve the facility’s efficiency and increase production through minimal changes in the treatment process. The FR technology, supplied by Galene Water Treatment, boasts improved recoveries to the tune of 5% to 14%. The improved recovery dramatically reduces demand on aquifer withdrawal and reduces injection well disposal. The pilot testing results present the FR technology data and showcase its potential for existing and new facilities across the industry. This paper will present pilot testing results showcasing FR technology’s impact on RO operation and stated benefits. Additional documentation will be provided to identify ancillary impacts to the facility’s operation and recommendations for consideration when implementing this technology. The paper presents the impact on capital upgrade to the facility and respective payback for the City. These results and conclusions of impact to the facility should be shared for other existing and new RO and NF treatment facilities to consider in the ever-tightening availability of water supplies for our potable water utilities.
