Increasing regulatory requirements and disposal costs around the world, as well as ESG mandates and incentives for recycling, are prompting industries to reduce their water and energy footprint, and highlight a growing need for innovation in reverse osmosis (RO) technology. Historically, it was challenging for conventional RO technologies to achieve recovery rates greater than 75% without significant downtime due to frequent cleaning requirements. This limitation consequently warranted equipment for standby capacity, driving up installation costs. As a pioneer in the high efficiency reverse osmosis (HERO®) process for Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) and Minimum Liquid Discharge (MLD) applications, Aquatech has focused on continuously evolving the recovery equation that is crucial to water and wastewater treatment applications across industries and infrastructure. Through implementing a high pH, low scaling environment, scaling and fouling have been vastly reduced. While the industry standard for high recoveries has since progressed past 90%, Aquatech has continually evolved high recovery reverse osmosis over generations of applications as well as deployed other process improvements and innovative RO pretreatment configurations to offer greater than 95% recovery consistently, without needing extended downtime for maintenance. This paper will describe advancements in high recovery reverse osmosis and other process improvements that allow recoveries greater than 95%. It will also present some practical applications where high recovery reverse osmosis has been implemented at a larger scale, including a sewage/industrial wastewater treatment RO plant in Singapore, an application where RO reject from a municipal wastewater treatment plant is converted to high purity water for industrial reuse, cooling tower blowdown high recovery ZLD application, Egypt’s first high recovery integrated ZLD, and a pharmaceutical wastewater ZLD plant.
