This paper details two retrofit case studies for systems located in the City of Toluca and the City of Macomb, Illinois, USA. A reverse osmosis system process or design retrofit is a truly viable option for municipalities that own and operate systems that are no longer performing as promised or as designed. Retrofits can offer very satisfying returns on investment (ROI), particularly when significant reductions in operation and maintenance (O&M) costs are achieved. The approaches detailed in this paper offer water treatment professionals and system operators a template to identify some of the advantages of good system design. All parties involved in these projects were seen as collaborative partners, ensuring that the resulting process design outcome is a shared responsibility and success.
