Membrane fouling is typically multifaceted meaning cleanings can often leave non-targeted foulants behind. Matching the appropriate chemical to remove the corresponding foulant on the membrane surface is the greatest hurdle in achieving an effective cleaning. A variety of techniques exist to help identify what is fouling the system and by extension, which cleaners are best suited to remove them. Water quality testing, cleaning studies, foulant analysis, and membrane autopsy are some of the most effective tools to help optimize any cleaning regiment. This presentation will discuss how these techniques can be deployed to identify potential problems and the ideal cleaning solutions.
