The Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority (Water Authority) is developing a state of the art on site water resources recovery plant, located at a shopping center in the uptown district of Albuquerque. The Winrock Town Center was originally constructed in the early 1960s and is currently undergoing a complete renovation. The vision for the redevelopment is to create a mixed-use open-air retail, hospitality, office, and residential center. A vital component of which is the On- Site Water Resource Recovery Plant (WRRP). The WRRP will be a Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) based, non-potable reuse treatment facility. The facility will harvest wastewater from a sewer main that conveys wastewater from the Winrock Town Center and treat it to be reused in the Winrock Town Center primarily for a central water feature, however the recycled water may also be used for turf and edible crop irrigation. The MBR will be sized to produce 25,000 gallons of tertiary filtered, disinfected recycled water per day. Solids produced from the biological treatment system will be returned to the sewer and conveyed to The Water Authority’s central wastewater treatment facility the Southside Water Reclamation Plant (SWRP) to be processed. The WRRP will be an unmanned remote facility as well as the first MBR for the Water Authority. Operations will only monitor performance remotely. Any processes changes will be caried out on site. The WRRP will contain a 12,000 gallon reclaimed water storage tank and a pump station to distribute the reclaimed water back into the Winrock Town Center. This paper will review some of the challenges and solutions in the journey of adapting MBR into this satellite facility, including: • Facility siting in a sensitive environment with proximity to restaurants and shopping.• Navigating permitting requirements. • Connecting to and harvesting from a nearby sewer main. • Matching capacity to anticipated current and future water demands • Membrane bioreactor membrane and system selection.
