The occurrence of emerging organic contaminants in the environment originating from both point sources (e.g., wastewater treatment plants, industrial activity, etc.) and non-point sources (e.g., veterinary pharmaceuticals, pesticides, etc.) has triggered increasing concern regarding drinking water production. Most experts concur that the health risks associated with these contaminants, at the trace levels they generally occur in water resources, are negligible. However, questions remain on the potential effects of mixtures, and the media regularly choose to address the issue in the public arena.
