In response to mandated reductions in historical supply sources, California American Water is poised to implement the Monterey Peninsula Water Supply Project (MPWSP) as a sustainable replacement water supply solution on the Monterey Peninsula. The combination of desalination, aquifer storage and recovery, and (possibly) groundwater replenishment promises to stabilize and sustain the vitality and economy of this unique community, which has endured water shortages for almost two decades. Design and construction resources have been secured with the expectation that construction can begin in early 2016 upon completion of the current environmental review and permitting process. A test slant well is currently being constructed to develop vital information that will facilitate the permitting and design of the full-scale source water intake system and desalination plant.
